Follow these steps when you’re ready to jump into eLearning.

Log in to AdviceCafé
Click learn on the menu
A notification will pop up saying we’ve sent you an invite to eLearning at the bottom of your AdviceCafé screen

Check your email and click the Accept Invite button

Installing AdviceCafé on iOS

Adding AdviceCafé to your iOS device's home screen

AdviceCafé is available only through your AdviceCafé membership, and unavailable to download directly from the App Store.

Step 1.

On your iOS device, open your Safari browser and navigate to app.advicecafe.ca.

Step 2.

Press the three dots, and then the Share button in your browser.

Step 3.

Scroll down and press Add to Home Screen.

Step 4.

Keep the name AdviceCafé, and press Done next to the text keyboard or Add in the upper right-hand corner.

Step 5.

Done! An AdviceCafé icon should appear on your home screen on your device. You can now open AdviceCafé from your home screen by selecting the icon and entering your email and password to log in.

Adding expenses

Adding your housing, transportation, financial obligations and miscellaneous expenses in AdviceCafé

Expenses can be either committed or spendable, which is a better way to understand your personal financial situation and stay on track.

Committed expenses

Your committed expenses are predictable expenses that benefit from automation. Committed expenses are divided into three main categories: Housing 🏡, Transportation 🚗, and Financial Obligations 🧾.

Housing 🏡 - committed expenses related to housing such as condo fees, rent, insurance, etc.

Transportation 🚗 - committed expenses related to transportation such as gas, parking, maintenance, etc.

Financial Obligations 🧾 - all other committed expenses such as insurance, savings contributions, childcare, etc.

|| Note: If you tithe regularly, a monthly expense item should be created in the Financial Obligations 🧾 section.

Spendable expenses are found in the Miscellaneous 🛒 section, and tend to be difficult to calculate and can vary significantly:

Money found basics

Money found is calculated using your income, spendable and committed expenses, which is on the Home page of your AdviceCafé account.

Money found = income - spendable - committed expenses

Every dollar of your money found should have a job, which will help you avoid overspending and encourage you to succeed with your spendable.

Putting your money found to work

How you allocate your money found depends on how much was found by AdviceCafé. Here are some general guidelines on how to use your money found:

Less than $300

Divide money found between a short-term goal and emergency savings.

Between $300-$600

Allocate a minimum of $150 towards both short-term goals and emergency savings, and then put the rest toward future savings.

Greater than $600

Allocate a minimum of $200 towards both short-term goals and emergency savings, and then divide the rest between future savings and debt repayment.

Short-term goals 🌴

Short-term goals are personal goals that motivate you to stay within your spendable, such as a vacation ✈️, season tickets ⚽, or a home renovation 🛠️. When selecting a short-term goal, it should be:

achievable within 6-18 months;
not a financial goal, i.e. paying down debt or saving for retirement; and

Adding your debt in AdviceCafé

On the Finances page, the Debt section is where you add your current debts such as credit cards, lines of credit, loans, etc. Details you should include are the current balances, monthly payments, interest rates, as well as debt limits and minimum monthly payments.

|| Note: It's important to add all of your debt to ensure recommendations are based on a complete picture of your finances.

Here are a few examples of debt to help jog your memory:

Credit cards (excluding those you pay off in full each month)
Lines of credit
Student loans
Medical debts
Payday loans
Car loans
Tax debts
Personal debts (to family, friends, etc.)

Credit cards

Do you use your credit card for your committed expenses (i.e. cell phone, cable/internet, utilities/hydro/power, etc.)? If so, it's important to include all monthly recurring committed expenses in the appropriate Expenses sections (i.e. Housing 🏡, Transportation 🚗 and Financial Obligations 🧾) on the Finances page.

Spendable basics and tips

Spendable cash flow (or spendable for short) is money designated for day-to-day expenses. It combines the traditional categories of wants, variable and discretionary expenses into one simple number so that you always know what is safe to spend.

Spendable tips

Using your spendable should feel easy; however, it's normal for things to take some getting used to. Here are a few tips to help you maintain your spendable.

Create a new account

Set up a new spendable account that is separate from your committed expenses.

Set up an automated transfer

Automate a weekly transfer of your spendable recommended by AdviceCafé to your spendable account.

Double check your expenses

Watch out for any committed expenses accidentally coming out of your spendable account. It's easy to forget and use your spendable account to pay for your fuel at the gas station, but it will reduce your balance and could make you feel like you don't have enough money to get through the week. 😔

Say no to credit cards

Never use a credit card for spendable expenses! Large purchases (like flights, furniture, etc.) that you typically use credit for are considered short-term goals and kept separate from your spendable.
